4 Ways to Have a Happy Holiday Season During Divorce

On Behalf of | Nov 27, 2019 | Divorce, Firm News

For someone going through divorce, the emphasis on family and togetherness during winter holidays can exacerbate feelings of sadness, loss, and/or defeat. For this reason, it is important to come up with a few coping strategies before the holidays.

Here are 4 ways to add some cheer to your holiday plans:

1. Start Planning Early

If you share custody of the children with your ex, don’t wait until the week before to decide who gets the kids over the holiday. If your children will be spending a holiday with you, make sure the season is a little more special than usual to ease all of you into the new standard of living. Perhaps they can help you think of a new holiday tradition that’s fun and memorable.

If you don’t have any children, reach out to your friends and family to let them know you will be on your own and create a plan with someone you care about. People may not want to unduly upset you by reaching out first or asking about your holiday plans.

2. Take Some Time for Self-Care

It is important to focus on healing your mind and heart during this time. If you have never had a self-care routine or your routine has fallen to the wayside, consider beginning a new one. Whether that be taking walks with your dog or reading a book in the bath, you should focus on investing in your mental and physical well-being.

3. Start New Traditions

Perhaps you have always wanted to decorate a Christmas tree while watching a movie or bake your favorite cookies on one of the 8 nights of Hanukkah—now is the perfect time to start. Volunteering for those less fortunate may be a fulfilling option for you as well. A positive aspect of your new circumstances is that you get to celebrate the holidays any way you like.

4. Connect with Family & Friends

Family and friends can provide a comforting presence that will nurture you while bringing joy and love. If you are feeling lonely, surround yourself with people who care about you and wish to offer support while you heal.
