Mistakes Fathers Make During Custody Battles

Mistakes Fathers Make During Custody Battles

Divorce is easily one of the most complicated, stressful, and contentious situations for anyone to go through, especially if there are children involved. In the past, courts were unfair in their judgement of child custody as they often awarded primary custody to mothers as opposed to fathers. In recent times, however, these biased judgements have become far less common as people now realize just how essential a father is to his child’s wellbeing.

The following are common mistakes fathers make during divorce or custody cases, including but not limited to:

  • Not paying child support – Skipping out on child support has never looked good for anyone, and it can lead to serious consequences which will be hard to shake off.
  • Not prioritizing your children – Seeing your children as much as possible is the most important thing you can do as a father. Making a sincere effort will not only make everyone happier all around, but it will bode well for you in the entire custody process.
  • Leaving the family home – While you may never want to see your ex-spouse or child’s mother again, this is one of the worst decisions you can make, as it can be misconstrued as abandonment. If you feel leaving will help keep the peace, make sure there is at least a temporary agreement in place before you make a serious and lasting decision.
  • Overextending your finances – Putting yourself at risk financially will only lead to negative results in the future.
  • Not asking for court modifications if necessary – If you cannot afford to keep up payments because you have lost your job or are in any other extenuating circumstances, don’t just stop paying and hope you will be able to get back on your feet ASAP. You need to notify the courts so as to avoid serious consequences and remains as honest as possible.
  • Not cooperating with your child’s mother – You and your ex are obviously separated for a reason. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to work together as best as possible. If you show sincere effort, the courts will have no choice but to be fair to you.
