How to Survive Your First Christmas Alone During Divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 15, 2016 | Child Custody, Firm News

You’ve broken the news to your spouse that you want a divorce earlier this year. As the dust clears, you realize this will be your first Christmas morning you’ll be able to sleep past 6 am. You be ripped from your sleep to the sound of your son or daughter elatedly screaming, “Wake up! Santa was here!” For some parents, this could be a great thing. But for many of us, waking up to a silent house on Christmas sucks. In this blog, our Framingham child custody attorneys have a few ideas on what you can do to help you get through your first Christmas alone after your divorce. 1.Tell Your Friends: The holidays are a time of sharing, giving and love. If you’re worried about the spending Christmas morning alone, start telling your friends how you feel. You will be surprised by how many offers you’ll get to be included in their holiday plans. 2.Make your favorite meal: If you’re spending Christmas Eve alone, head out to the grocery store and pick out some of your favorite non-kid friendly foods. Maybe you love lobster tail and risotto, or you could try making your favorite dessert. (Hello, Crème Brulee!) 3.Get Moving: If you’re feeling sad on Christmas, head out for a run. Science shows moving our bodies can boost your mood. 4.Make a schedule: With the stress of the holiday and managing your divorce, it can be difficult to keep track of all your responsibilities. Make a list of all the things you need to accomplish, this will help you feel less stressed and in more control of the situation. 5.Help someone else out: Volunteer at the local soup kitchen or surprise your elderly neighbor with a cozy winter basket, offer to walk your busy friend’s dogs. When our hearts are hurting, sometimes doing something nice for someone else can help. However you spend this holiday season, remember this is only the first year and holidays come and go faster than you think. We at Barach Law Group LLC, so many clients compromise for time spent with the kids during the holidays, and we understand how hard it can be.
